Before the Middle Ages, the whole Europe was under the government of Roman Empire. However, a tribe of East Germanic who were called the Goth started to migrate to the south from the 3rd century. During 2 hundred years, the Goths kept migrating and invading Roman territory. Eventually, they successfully capturing the Roman City in AD476, resulting in the fatal collapse of Roman Empire. The period after the Goth conquered Rome to the Renaissance is called the Middle Ages and the artistic style of this period was called Gothic by the people of Renaissance period.

The history of the invasion of the Goth was never glorious to the Italians. In order to separate the period when the Goth governed the country, people called it the disgraceful Middle Ages. Giorgio Vasari, an Italian architect and painter was the first one to employ the word “Gothic” which represented barbarism and absurdity when people talked about the style of arts at the Middle Ages. In another word, Gothic style was not created by the Goth. Under the influence of those philosophers of Renaissance, the word “ Gothic” is gradually referred to a style with mystery, barbarism, horror etc.

Nowadays, people use Gothics to indicate something with dark, bloody, hopeless, violent or absurd elements. Nowadays Gothic is not only referred to an artistic style, but also represents other things which have dark, mystery or horror elements. Due to its distinct characteristics, it’s still not a mainstream style for most of the people. However, a small group of people really have a fever for it. Some of them like dressing in a Gothic style, some of others like doing Gothic makeup and even few of them would like to hold a Gothic wedding. People have already been aware of the artistic value and aesthetic of Gothic arts though it is widely known as a symbol of anything related to dark. We should try to look at it in a different way and learn to appreciate its beauty which is hidden behind its dark elements.
